Movie Making in New Mexico

The photos on this page were taken at the old part of the New Mexico State Penitentiary on state road 14, just south of Santa Fe.  This part of the “state pen” has been renamed “Allenville Federal Penitentiary” for the next few weeks during the remaking of a comedy / drama from 1974 which starred Burt Reynolds and Eddie Albert.  “The Longest Yard” will again have Burt Reynolds as one of its stars, but this time will feature Adam Sandler as the main character.  Chris Rock is also scheduled to star along with many other notables (see: imdb.com/title/tt0398165/ for more info).

The Longest Yard” will shoot for about five weeks in New Mexico before finishing up in California.  A release date is tentatively scheduled for late Spring or early Summer of 2005.

The deadline for submitting projects to The Governor’s Cup Film Festival will be August 30th.  For more information see the Film Office website at: nmfilm.com or call 827-9810.

The Center for Contemporary Arts (CCA) announces its fourth annual tribute to the cinema of the indigenous peoples of the world, August 19-25, and will be screening more than 30 international films at CCA (assuming the CCA hasn’t been kicked out of their building yet. Actually, they aren’t supposed to get the “boot” until September of 2005, but, hey, who knows for sure?).  The Native Cinema Showcase is held during Indian Market to celebrate the creativity of Native cinema today.

The Screen Actors Guild Conservatory will present: Audition Technique for film, television, and commercials. Tom Schuch (SAG, AFTRA, and Equity) is conducting an on-camera film acting workshop designed to prepare actors for what will be a year of acting opportunities never before seen in New Mexico.  For more information see the Film Office website.

Believe Productions is in pre-production for the $7 mil feature "Believe in Me," directed by Robert Collector. They are accepting applications for all crew positions.

Dumb Buddy

(1996-Wisconsin) I am writing to tell people of a good friend of mine who will someday grace your pages as a Darwin Award winner. This incident took place about 1996 in the city where I live. I was at a mutual friends house (Ed) and we received a call from our absent-minded friend (Eric). After an exclaimed "What" and "How" from my friend who answered the phone he ran out of the room. I picked up the phone and Eric's only words were "I shot myself in the head get here quick" Well Eric's house was about two city blocks away so my friend and I ran there in about 2 minutes. Our buddy Eric answers the door holding his eye removes his hand and presents us with a .22 cal. long rifle casing sticking out of his head about half an inch above his left eye and about a quarter inch into his head. After we stopped laughing we yanked the casing out with a needle nose pliers and got to hear the story that follows. That after noon Eric and another highly intelligent kid from the neighborhood decided to take turns shooting the bullet with a pellet gun while holding it in a pliers and trying to shoot at a target in Eric’s back yard. After several attempts and some luck Eric got the bullet to fire however he highly miscalculated the kick back of said bullet and was not holding the pliers very tight. The casing kicked back and hit him with enough force to push the empty casing though his forehead and it came to rest I would guess when it hit his thick skull. The suction created was to great for him to remove it and we were called. To this day Eric has a perfect circle scar above his left eye and has yet to live it down. (www.darwinawards.com)
